The story of ELGA:
1930 - 1970
1937 - Founded by Walter Lorch, the company began by importing household appliances from Germany for resale in the UK.
1955 - The "Top-it-up" was introduced in 1955 to purify tap water used for household irons and featured a cartridge deionizer with ion exchange resins that extended the life of the irons.
1959 - ELGA LabWater moves to Lane End, Buckinghamshire (UK)
1960 - ELGA collaborates with the London School of Pharmacy to develop its first products for the hospital market, laboratories and industry in general.
1970 - 1990
1979 - ELGA opens the School of Water Sciences, where Walter Lorch publishes "The Handbook of Water Purification". The Lorch Foundation is established to support, encourage and ensure the continuity of future research by students interested in water science.
1986 - ELGA receives its first ever patent for water purification devices incorporating ion exchange technology and resins .
1990 - 2000
1990 - ELGA creates the first small laboratory water purification system box using UV photo-oxidation .
1992 - The PureSure® method is a two-bed ion exchange process that provides interstage resistivity monitoring, which allows for the retention, through a secondary cartridge, of any impurities released following the exhaustion of a primary cartridge. Real-time TOC monitoring is also introduced.
1995 - The first water purification product specifically designed for the clinical diagnostic market is introduced under the name MEDICA ®
1998 - ELGA introduces Recirculating EDI , which extends the life of the EDI battery. This technology was first used in the PURELAB Option-E5; it is now used in our latest PURELAB Chorus 2+ and in our EDI MEDICA products .
2000 - 2010
2000 - ELGA became part of what was formerly Vivendi Water Systems Limited. The company, part of the Veolia Group , was renamed Veolia Water Systems LTD.
2003 - CENTRA ® is launched and becomes the first centralized, single-unit system for laboratory water purification. The product won the Industrial Product Design Award in 2004.
2009 - PURELAB flex 1 and 2 are launched
2010 - 2020
2011 - Launch of the award-winning PURELAB flex 3 and 4 products . Some examples of awards include: Red Dot, dBA Design Effectiveness, Gold Medal for Materials Innovation and Gold Medal for Industrial Product Design.
2017 - The complete PURELAB range is introduced to the research and life sciences market. The complete collection includes PURELAB Chorus, PURELAB flex and PURELAB Classic .
2020 - Today
2020 - Launch of PURELAB Quest, the only purifier on the market to distribute the 3 types of water suitable for scientific work from a compact, economical and easy-to-use system.
